Planes-Chapter 8: The Runway Crash

In 1997, the airport named Lon Rodeos airport in Spain had the most air traffic due to the rainy weather. At 12:05 pm there were 5 planes in the queue for takeoff. It was Sunday so only 2 teams were handling the control tower. The Pam Am flight is ready to take off but a KLM flight is refueling in front of them. They got a message that the KLM flight has finished refueling and is moving to the runway. The Pam Am flight is also following the KLM flight to the runway. Due to the bad weather, the air traffic control was having a problem seeing the runway so they only used the radio system. The KLM was moving to the runway but the Pam Am flight was also told to hold for taxi clearance on the runway. The KLM was on the runway and was ready to take off. At the same time, the Pam Am flight was told to take a right 180 degrees turn to runway A1 where the KLM was ready to take off. The air traffic control said to the Pam Am flight that stop for the KLM to fly. The KLM increased their speed to takeoff but the co-pilot was worried that is the runway clear. So, the KLM asked the air traffic control the Saud the runway is clear you can proceed to takeoff. The KLM was increasing their speed for takeoff. Then the co-pilot saw another plane moving towards. The plane that was coming towards the KLM was the Pam Am flight. The pilots of KLM increased the full speed of the plane so that it can take off before the KLM hits the Pam Am flight. The KLM was flying but the back of the flight hits the ground and couldn't fly. The passengers were shouting but unfortunately, the KLM crashed into the Pam Am flight. 384 people died and 22 were saved. The investigation team came and checked what happened that the plane crashed they found that the radio system was not working well due to the bad weather so the directions where the plane needs to move were not clear and due to the air traffic control, they couldn't understand that the both planes were flying at the same runway. This was the end of the runway crash.

Why Do Glass Windows Shatter During Fire?

You might have noticed in movies and also in real life that whenever there is a fire inside a building, the glass windows crack and break. The openings of the windows in the walls of the room on fire play a key role in the spread of fire. Windows are those parts of the buildings that generally have less resistance to fire in comparison to that of the walls. During a fire,  there is a increase in temperature inside the room. The glass pane is not subjected to uniform heat from the fire. Glass windows are fitted within the frames, and the thickness of the frame is larger in comparison to that of the glass pane. There is an intense heat flow that is suddenly experienced on one side of a glass pane. As a result, the heat focussed on the central region of the glass causes it to expand. While the edges of the pane happen to be relatively cooler,  which induces stress in the material. This shifting gradient is known to shatter the glass to pieces.
